Muteru holds a BA in Communication and Media from the Egerton University, Kenya. Before joining the Fellowship Programme he worked at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Nairobi. At ISS Muteru conducted research and supported policy formulation on addressing security issues in Eastern African countries. At KNHCR he was involved in assessing human rights violations in the Kenyan post-election violence in 2008 and extra-judicial killings that were linked to organised crime networks in Kenya. 
As part of the fellowship program, Muteru is currently studying on the MA in Conflict, Security and Development at King’s College London.
