The Conflict, Security and Development Group

The Security and Development Fellowships for African Scholars aims to develop the capacity of the next generation of African scholars in the fields of peace, security and development as well as generate a multiplier effect within African higher education institutions. The 18-month Fellowships address gaps in the absence of capacity in African universities for sustained rigorous analysis in the field of peace, security and development. As part of the Fellowship programme, CSDG/ALC facilitate the development of a network of select African institutions to develop and sustain programmes on peace, security and development and engage Fellows on these programmes.

The Security and Development Fellowships for African Scholars is funded by the Carnegie Corporation. The Fellowship Programme will have its first set of Fellows resuming in September 2010.

The Fellowship programme is delivered in three parts. The first part comprises a research and training programme at King’s College London. This programme includes participation in a Master’s programme at the War Studies department at King’s College London in either Conflict Security and Development or International Peace and Security. This phase will include a simulation seminar during which a mock conflict management situation will be practiced.

This training programme also comprises a strong mentoring component where a core staff familiar with African peace and security institutional frameworks, global security, development policy and research methodology as well as a core group consisting of leading academic and policy analysts in the field of development, international peace and security deliver highly interactive mentoring sessions. This will especially enable Fellows broaden their knowledge base on key security and development issues affecting Africa and interrogate the discourse in Africa using their own experiences and visions of the future.

The second part of the Fellowship comprises institutional visits to research, academic and policy institutions working on issues relating to peace and security in Africa.

The third component of the Fellowship constitutes attachments to academic institutions in Africa. Following the period of training at King’s College London, Fellows will be attached to select University departments in Africa focussing on conflict, security and peace studies. The attachments are for a period of six months. During this period, Fellows will be expected to work within the University system to implement specific research projects in the field of peace and security, with continued mentoring from the ALC/CSDG.

Upon completing the Fellowship programme, Fellows will be expected to conduct a research project on an agreed topic, and to produce a policy brief from their research. These policy briefs will be published and disseminated amongst institutions of higher learning in the region.
