Senior Gender Advisor, UN Mision in Liberia (UNMIL)

Comfort Lamptey currently serves as Senior Gender Adviser to the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), where she serves as principal adviser on gender issues to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General. She also spearheads efforts on the part of UNMIL to provide technical support to the Government of Liberia on gender-related issues and priorities. Before joining UNMIL in 2011, Ms. Lamptey served as a Gender Advisor to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) from 2004 when this position was first established. In this capacity, she spearheaded the development of a Policy on Gender and Peacekeeping, the design of various guidelines and tools, and provided substantive oversight to the work of gender components in DPKO-led missions.

 

Prior to this, Ms. Lamptey worked with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as a Regional Advisor in West Africa and as Senior Gender Advisor at the Headquarters in Geneva. She supported UNHCR to develop amongst others, a global programme of support on preventing addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in refugee settings.

Between 2000 and 2004, Ms Lamptey worked with the UN Development Fund for Women, and played an instrumental role in getting UNIFEM’s global programme on women, peace and security underway. 

Prior to joining the UN, Ms. Lamptey worked with a London-based NGO, International Alert which specializes in the field of conflict prevention and conflict resolution. Ms. Lamptey has also served on a number of technical committees and as Board member to a number of African-based organizations working in the field of peace and development. Her professional experience to date has included support to programmes and partners in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Ms. Lamptey is a graduate of the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, where she obtained her Batchelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations.
