The CSDG/ECOWAS Peace and Security Fellowship is now in its second year. The Fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The Programme brings together five West Africans in the early stages of their career to undertake a carefully designed MA and training programme in Conflict, Security and Development at King’s College London. This training will conclude with an attachment to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and related institutions to acquire practical experience in the field of peace and security.

The Programme lasts 18 months. The first part of the Programme entails full-time study at King’s College London, where successful candidates pursue an MA Conflict, Security and Development and attend specifically designed training courses on African peace and security. During this period of study in the UK they undertake a simulation seminar during which a mock conflict management situation will be practiced. In the second part, of Phase 1, they conduct visits to several UK institutions working in the field of peace and security and undertake research visits to partner institutions in Europe, such as the European Union Parliament, Council of Ministers and the Commission; International Crisis Group, Brussels and Geneva Centre of Security Policy. They also visit partner institutions in the United States, including the International Peace Institute, and City University of New York (CUNY).

The second part of the CSDG/ ECOWAS Peace and Security Fellowship will be based at the ECOWAS Commission and related institutions, where participants on the programme will be based for a minimum period of 6 months. Here, they follow a structured program applying knowledge gained through training while also gaining direct experience of the workings of the organization. Under the supervision of senior staff working in the field of peace and security, they will participate in and contribute to the day-to-day work of the organization. They will also be exposed to the complexities of the sub-region and to the stark realities confronting the practitioners operating in the field of peace and security in West Africa.

We prepare the new announcements every year and they are available in February/ March. The Fellowships start Sept/Oct every year. For further information contact Eka Ikpe: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
