Launch of the African Leadership Centre in Nairobi-The Conflict, Security and Development Group (CSDG), King's College London successfully launched the African Leadership Centre (ALC) on 24 June 2010 in Nairobi. The ALC will operate in partnership with the university of Nairobi and other African institutions.
The ALC is an exciting new initiative led by CSDG. The ALC will contribute to Africa's long-term social, political and economic development by mentoring and training the next generation of talented, young leaders and facilitating their participation in change processes within their communities.
The launch was held at the intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi. The keynote speaker was Professor Abdoulaye Bathily, Secretary-General of the Democratic League/Movement for the Labour Party. The launch was attended by 150 guests from organisations including the Women's Development Fund, Ford Foundation, University of Nairobi, Makerere University, the Swedish Embassy and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
The launch was accompanied by a number of activities including an Alumni conference which reunited Fellows from six years of CSDG's fellowship programmes. The ALC also hosted a mapping conference on peace and security institutions in Africa attended by representatives from tertiary Institutions and NGOs from across the continent.
Conflict, Security and Development Group/King's College London Fellowship Alumni Conference-The African Leadership Centre hosted the first Conflict, Security and Development Group Fellowship Alumni Conference on 23 June 2010 in Nairobi. The conference offered the first opportunity for fellows from across Africa to reflect on their post-fellowship experiences and assess the fellowship programme from a practical perspective. Current fellows also participated in the day-long conference. The conference was also attended by both mentors of the programme and staff, and was followed by an Alumni cocktail hosted on the ALC premises. ALC Mapping Study-A workshop entitled "The Mapping of Peace and Security Studies in African Tertiary Institutions," was held on June 24th at the African Leadership Centre (ALC) in Nairobi. The workshop brought together African faculty members and policy-makers from across the continent who are working on issues related to peace, security and development. The purpose of the workshop was to present the findings of the mapping research to the project funders and peace and security practitioners, and to discuss ways to broaden and synergize peace and security studies in African universities. Carnegie Corporation, the funding agency for this project, was represented at the workshop.
